Don't know if anyone's pointed you towards it yet, Quicksilver is an application that lets you ignore the Dock completely and bunch more (I really hate the dock). You might like it and want to try it out.

It was once described to me as "using The Force on your Mac."

$ which make
/usr/bin/make

$ which X
/usr/X11/bin/X

Right click the terminal to get a "new terminal option." I tend to use command-n when focusing a current terminal.

Re: spotlight in upper corner - I use spotlight a lot actually. But I like the idea of a window switcher. Of course you can bind expose to a corner which does basically the same thing.

Date and time: the iCal calendar shows the current date and month in the dock or clicking the time shows the full date.

Not sure what you mean by mount ssh connections. Maybe check out http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/?

I actually like the app bundles - an app is installed or removed generally by dragging its iconic representation to wherever you want it to be.

I agree with you though on several fronts: the trashcan annoys me, the finder - meh - and it is bizarre that apple failed to copy virtual desktops in a useful fashion. And dear god: FOCUS FOLLOWS MOUSE... which is how google landed me here :-)

Still .. I like my mac at least as much as I like my linux boxes at work and I appreciate the power management and monitor handling over what my linux laptop usually manages.

Good luck!

I left out my "I'm unfamiliar with the OS" complaints, since those are obviously unfair.

Psst. I think the answer is you're not familiar with the OS. I think you want it to do everything a way that you're used to, and it doesn't. However I can do everyone on your list quickly and easily either with hidden information that I've acquired through the years, or do it in another way which is just as useful. Of course some is just preference. I mean window magnetism would drive me nuts because that's not the way I'm used to windows behaving.

I agree it's not as configurable out of the box as a standard u*ix (remember when we used to do that?) install but that's not the point of the OS. I understood that I'd have to install fink and other useful bits on the OS myself to be able to run the specific bits I was after.

Just use OpenBSD if you're looking for the wireless, I'd suggest -current if the card is broadcom, the bwi is from DragonFly BSD, but was recently imported into OpenBSD.

Crank Sturgeon is great. You should seek out his albums-- they're equally amazing. --DaveX
